August 9 - Celebrate

On August 9 we want to set aside a day to celebrate the volunteers at Cypress and all that they have accomplished in the past year.

What ideas do you have that we could incorporate into our weekend service to honor our volunteers?

Is this in the Sunday service or outside of that time - like a dinner/lunch themed event??

Also is there a theme floating around already - ie "Lighting up the world" - could give out light bulbs with hang tags as reminders?

Also the over extended volunteer drama is always funny as I think has worked well in the past.

Something fun I have seen before are "Aprreciation Stations" where volunteers can mosy around and at each station there are photos, stories and a special treat associated with the overall theme. Snacks, Tea, Mints, Candies, Desserts, Chotz-kies - so in the end they leave with somewhat of a goody bag of sorts.

Here are some theme/gift type ideas - most can be done fairly quickly and don't cost too much:
Candle - Present a candle with a card saying "You light the way" or "No one can hold a candle to you"
Light bulbs - "You light the way -- thanks for your glowing enthusiasm."
Permanent marker - "You've made a lasting and permanent contribution to your group."
Lucky Charm cereal - "We're so LUCKY to have you!"
100 Grand candy bars - "Volunteers are priceless."
Payday candy bar - "Volunteers don't receive a salary because they're worthless... it's because they're priceless!"
Gold chocolate coins - "Volunteers are worth their weight in gold."
Andes mints/ peppermint patties - "Your service is worth a mint to us!"
Ruler/Tape measure - "It's easy to measure the difference you've made in our group -- you're amazing!"
Clock - "Thanks for the time you've given to our group!"
Group's logo Hat - "Our hats are off to you! Thanks for all you do!"
Shirt - "We know you'd give the shirt off your back... so here's an extra one for the next time you give your all."
Toaster - "A Toast to a super volunteer! Whenever you use this toaster, remember to toast yourself, too!"
Plant - "We grow luckier every day you're with us."

Poem type things
Volunteers
Valuable is the work you do.
Outstanding in how you always come through.
Loyal, sincere and full of good cheer,
Untiring in your efforts throughout the year.
Notable are the contributions you make,
Trustworthy in every project you take.
Eager to reach your every goal,
Effective in the way you fulfill your role.
Ready with a smile like a shining star,
Special and wonderful - that's what you are.
-----------------------------------
Why be a Volunteer

It’s not for the money, it’s not for fame
and it’s not for any personal gain.
It's for love of fellow man,
It’s just to lend a helping hand.
It’s just to give the tithe of self.
That’s something you can’t buy with wealth.
It’s not the medals worn with pride.
It's just for that feeling deep inside.
It’s that reward down in your heart.
It’s the feeling that you’ve been a part
Of helping others far and near,
That makes you a VOLUNTEER.

-----------------------------------
Ode to Volunteers

Many will be shocked to find
When the Day of Judgement nears
That there's a special place in
Heaven set aside for volunteers.
Furnished with big recliners,
Satin couches and footstools -
Where there's's no committee chair,
No group leaders for carpools.
Telephone lists will be outlawed,
But a finger snap will bring
Cool drinks and gourmet dinners,
And rare treats fit for a king.
You ask, who's serve the privileged few
And work for all they're worth?
Why, those who reaped the benefits
And not once volunteered on earth.

-----------------------------------
Hooray for Volunteers
(to the tune of "Hooray for Hollywood")

Hooray for volunteers
These extra super special volunteers
We couldn't copy without your smiling faces
And feel this place is
Great because you are here
Those tough jobs we wish
We could accomplish
You take on and do with the best of cheer
Hooray for volunteers
With you on board our troubles disappear
An any one of you will always come through
Each time we need you
To help us get the job done
We think the world of you
And of the job you do
Hooray for volunteers!

Randy Travis - Point of Light Song
A little too honky tonk but if updated or given a different edge would be really nice.

Hi Anonymous! this is going to be in the context of a Sunday service.

Also, there is not currently a theme, but a need for one, we've tossed around some ideas but not landed on one. Would love suggestions here.

Do you remember the name of the overextended volunteer drama that you're thinking of?

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! Keep 'em coming.

I think it was "The Volunteer" or even "Born to Serve" was funny!

Here is a link to the song that I thought might make a nice backdrop to the volunteer slide show:

In case it doesn't work, search YouTube.com for Homeless Heart Amanda Stott.

Nice song for any other purpose too.
